Car Seats are safe with Air Protect® Technology
Offering unbeatable head and torso protection through two very distinct technology platforms, the Safety Shield is specifically designed to improve your child’s chances of surviving a crash. More specially, The cushion design of our Air Protect® Superior Side Impact Protection absorbs the energy away from your child’s head in the instance of an accident, while the GCELL® acts as a crumple zone, protecting their torso from side impact forces.
The Maxi-Cosi Safety Shield greatly reduces the severity of injuries your child faces when in the instance of a crash, or – ideally, help to prevent injury altogether.
Comprising Air Protect® and GCELL® Crash Absorbing Technology, the Safety Shield works together to contain the head and torso to minimize impact forces and deceleration rate of your child’s body during an accident.
Did you know?
Side impact car accident are especially dangerous for children and cause a third of all child crash fatalities, nearly all of which are due to head injuries. Car airbags are designed and positioned to protect adult heads, not those of children.
There's a lot to consider when it comes to choosing the right car seat for your family. Here are the main types of seats we carry at Maxi-Cosi:
Rearward facing baby capsules
In Australia, it is mandated that babies up to 6 months of age travel facing the rear of the car as it's much safer if a road accident were to occur. Baby capsules are the most lightweight option on the market and some can be configured to fit straight onto a stroller for absolute ease of use.
Convertible car seats
To get more bang for your buck, a convertible car seat will secure your bub from birth up to eight years old. These seats facilitate rearward facing travel and can be spun around in order to face the front of the car when your child can no longer sit comfortably and safely in the rear facing position.
Booster seats
Children over the age of four, or those who meet the height and weight requirements, will need a booster seat. This gives your child some extra height when using the lap sash seat belt that is pre-existing in your car. Children usually grow out of these seats by the age of around eight.
Depending on your choice of car seat and the type of car you own, up to three can fit across the back seat. Slimline car capsules and booster seats are available if you need to fit more than two car seats in your car. You will need to consult your car manual to see how many ISOFIX anchor points are available.
I have recently found that my car restraint doesn't have a high safety rating. What do you suggest?
You'll need to buy a new one that has the appropriate safety features and standard stickers. In Australia, compliance with safety standards is absolutely necessary for the car seat capsule to be used to restrain your child. If the seat you are using does not have a sticker displaying the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1754 then it is not safety compliant. This label will be on the packaging and the seat itself. All accessories that you purchase to go with the car safety seat need to comply with these standards in order to be used.
My nine-year-old doesn't want to use a booster seat because his friends don't, even though they are all shorter than the recommended height. What should I do?
Unfortunately, age is only a guide for determining when a child can start using an adult seat belt without a booster seat. Height and weight are better indicators on making the move from booster to existing seat and lap sash seat belt. You will need to explain to your child in terms that they will understand and make sure they know it's for their safety. If they can't comply, then you will be breaking the law.
Does my baby need to travel in a car seat when I'm in a taxi? What about when in a rideshare service like Uber?
If you're planning on using a taxi, you will need to take your child's car seat on the ride with you. In some states of Australia, taxis can provide your child with a car seat if you organise this ahead of time. The rules currently state that taxis must have one anchorage point for a car seat, and children and babies are able to travel on the adult's lap if there are no car seats available. This is not recommended, but will assist you during extenuating circumstances.
In a rideshare situation like Uber or DiDi, different laws apply as these are private cars providing a service. Children under the age of seven must be seated in the appropriate car seat for their age group, as if they were travelling in their own car.
Should I buy a second-hand child safety seat?
It's not recommended to purchase your child safety seat second hand unless you know the complete history of the car seat, such as if it's been involved in a road accident and how long it has been in use. We know that lower prices can be tempting, but a second hand baby car capsule could be nearing its use by date. If you are going to make a second hand purchase please look for the following:
